YOU GET OUT OF MY BRAIN, NOW!!! I wanted to have this exact quote as a motto for this post, because it got stuck in my head and I couldn't stop thinking about it when I was writing, but then I decided that two Siken quotes in one meta would just be too pretentious. Seriously, get out of my brain!!!
In 2x01, Elena asks Damon how he's doing, and he plays it off and dances around, but it doesn't matter, SHE KNOWS ANYWAY.
The interesting thing is that when the dychotomy stands (= Elena others Damon), at the same time she sometimes attempts to familiarize him by establishing some sort of actual human communication with him? Like in 2x01 ("We should be able to talk about those things"), or the pep talk from 2x12. She knows that they work best with non-verbal communication (see: the silence they share in the end of 1x19), and yet she tries. Damon always shuts her down. The only time HE tries to communicate verbally is the pre-neck-snapping scene in 2x01 (2x08 and 2x22 don't count, because he was 1. going to compel her; 2. dying). In s3 it seems that they've established a well-balanced mode of communicating: they share things they don't talk about, and Elena sometimes needs to talk about things (like the bed scene in 3x08), so Damon listens. Now it's entirely possible for them to avoid misunderstandings, like, forever. It doesn't make them any more functional, but hey, it makes ME happy, because plots based on misunderstandings are my ultimate fictional pet peeve. IF BLOOD STAINS ON PERSIAN RUGS REINCARNATED AS PLOT DEVICES, THEY WOULD BE MISUNDERSTANDINGS!!!
Because the things she thought to be true have turned out to be false. The curtain's been pulled back. And what is left after every single one of her dreams have been shattered? Damon.
When do you know that you really are FUCKED? When you look around, and you see that the only solid, reliable thing left in your life is Damon Salvatore...
And I love how this very basic, selfish need of Damon's actually leads to this innate "selflessness"--for lack of a better word.
THIS SHIP. Selflessness born out of selfish motivations, on top of everything.
And, you know what, there are not too many people in the world who can bring out the worst in Elena Gilbert, and for that reason alone, I need her to be interacting with Damon all of the time. *g*
I don't even. You start talking about one aspect of this ship, and it brings out two more, and each of those brings another two, and so on... They could never be boring. And you know that dark!Elena is what I need in my life :D.
